Zanzibar Tourism Attractions

The UNDP Accelerator Lab, in partnership with OpenMap Development Tanzania and the State University of Zanzibar, conducted a detailed mapping and survey project to identify and analyze underutilized tourist attractions in Zanzibar. Using crowd mapping and mobile surveys, over 155 attractions were documented, with information on activities, nearby services, and visual data, to be featured in a publicly accessible web map. The study revealed that many attractions, despite their unique historical and cultural significance, suffer from underdevelopment, lack of cohesive narratives, poor management, and minimal visibility. The mapping exercise also highlighted the need for improved maintenance, investment, digital fee systems, and promotional efforts. With support from the Zanzibar Association of Tour Operators, Tourism Investors, and the Zanzibar Commission of Tourism, this project aimed to drive future tourism recovery, strengthen local tourism value chains, and encourage private investment to increase tourism resilience post-COVID.
